Rockport/Fulton TX Area Guide

Rockport CityRockport is located just 30 miles northeast of Corpus Christ, Texas. It is the county seat of Aransas County. This coastal community is home to approximately 8,000 people. Large, windswept oaks are a dominating feature of Rockport. The towns of Rockport and Fulton intermingle and many refer to the combined communities as “Rockport-Fulton.” Rockport is named for the rock ledge underlying its shore.

Rockport is surrounded on three sides by the waters of Aransas, Copano and Port bays. A variety of outdoor activities are Rockport’s appeal to tourists as well as local citizens. Rockport’s beachfront park has won numerous awards for “The Nation’s Cleanest Beach.”

Rockport boasts a mild winter climate and although summers can be hot, there’s always a cool sea breeze blowing. Many winter residents fall in love and return to live year round. Here in Rockport you will fit right in whether you are settling down, starting your business, or looking for the perfect home away from home.


Rockport/Fulton History

Rockport City 2Rockport was founded just after the Civil War as a cattle slaughtering, packing, and shipping port. William S. Hall built the first packeries in 1865 and soon there were also cattle pens built to keep the stock until slaughtering. The first mayor of Rockport was John Mathis. Rockport was incorporated as a town in 1870 and as a city in 1871.

Boatbuilding and fishing began to develop in Rockport as important industries in the 1880s. The resort trade and tourism began to blossom, especially after the railroad came to Rockport. The shrimping industry in Rockport developed between 1925 and 1930. By the early 1940s the town was home to sixty-five businesses and approximately 2,000 people. Rockport has since continued to steadily grow. Today the population of Rockport has reached over 7,000 people.


Rockport/Fulton Parks and Recreation

Rockport City 3The Rockport Parks and Recreation Department manages all city parks, athletic courts and fields, hike and bike trails, playgrounds, picnic sites, restrooms, rental facilities, boat ramps and pier, public beach, 2.6 acre freshwater pond, and various city-owned sites. The department also provides services to the Downtown Heritage District. The Rockport Parks and Recreation Department presents a variety of community-focused programs and events.

Rockport Events

Rockport City 4Don’t miss out on all the fantastic events in Rockport! Bring your family and friends and enjoy the fun perfect for everyone of all ages! Rockport provides exciting events year round. Come enjoy the annual Fulton Oysterfest or the Rockport Festival of Wines and have a great time!

Fulton Oysterfest
The Fulton Oysterfest takes place in March and is a salute to the oyster industry with plenty of food, entertainment, arts and crafts.

Rockport Festival of Wines
The Rockport Festival of Wines takes place in May and features two fabulous days of wine tasting, entertainment, cooking demonstrations and more on the Museum grounds.

Annual Rockport Offshore Challenge Fishing Tournament
The Annual Rockport Offshore Challenge Fishing Tournament occurs in July. Registration and the kick-off party is on Wednesday beginning at 2pm at Key Allegro Marina. The Awards Banquet is on Saturday at the Marina in Rockport.

Rockport/Fulton Attractions

Rockport City 5Come experience a little bit of Rockport’s past while visiting the Texas Maritime Museum or Fulton Mansion. These attractions are perfect for everyone in the family. Don’t miss out on visiting these spectacular places while in Rockport!

Texas Maritime Museum
The Texas Maritime Museum is a non-profit, privately-funded, historical museum located across from the Harbor in Rockport. The museum opened in 1989 and has since achieved several goals and has had many successful events. The Texas Maritime Museum hosts three annual events that supply a majority of the operating funds. Those are the Mah Jongg Tournament, the Rockport Festival of Wine and Food, and the Belle Ball. The museum accepts no state funding and relies on these events as well as admissions and grants to provide the best maritime experience in Texas.

Fulton Mansion
The Fulton Mansion began construction in 1874 by George and Harriet Fulton and was completed in 1877. The spacious and extravagant mansion overlooks the Aransas Bay and features ornate trim work and furnishings. It was restored in the early 1980s and now the architectural landmark is open for visitors.
